They headed south and arrived at the Noordzeekanaal, near IJmuiden.
Eli realised that sailing from IJmuiden would be their best chance of
escaping from the Germans, and although lots of people returned from
the port, Eli and the others decided to try their luck. In IJmuiden they
jumped on board an already overcrowded trawler, literally the last ship
English Summary
The bond between Alkmaar and Bath is
one of the oldest in Europe and its origins
are very special. It stems directly from the
great tragedy that befell the Netherlands
and the whole of Europe: World War II.
At home Eli prepared for his escape and left well after midnight,
leaving behind his parents who had decided to stay. He was unable
to track down his brother Aron and went to Mayor Van Kinschot's
residence on Nieuwlandersingel 57 Q to ask for his car, which no doubt
would soon be confiscated by the Germans. But the Mayor needed
it himself. The garage on Kennemerstraatweg Q did not have any
taxis available. However, a cab unexpectedly arrived, and so Eli Prins
decided to go, accompanied by two Jewish soldiers who had left their
battalion, determined to fight on in France. They first drove to
Waerdendelstraat 5 Qbecause Eli insisted on taking his good friend
Rosie Hahn, a well-known opera singer.
Eli Prins married Ida Buttle in 1948. Their son Gwythian is now an
honorary member of BATA. Ida passed away in 1993, and Eli in 1995.
They were buried at Bathford church cemetery. Eli's parents and brother
were murdered in Sobibor in 1943.
You can read the full story behind the twinning in the following book:

Alkmaar Friendship' byAletta Stevens (Bath: Brown Dog Books, 2020),

Prins zegde meteen toe. Sinds mei 1939 was
Eli took a job with the Dutch government in exile and joined the ARP
in Bath. He became friends with his chief warden, Frederick C. 'Jimmie'
Wills, who was also Secretary of the Rotary Club in Bath. The passio
nate stories Eli told of Alkmaar and the hardships of its citizens struck a
chord with Jimmie and he came up with the idea of adopting Eli's
hometown. In London Queen Wilhelmina gave her blessing. Prepara
tions for an Alkmaar Week in Bath to collect money and goods started
straightaway; a barrel organ 0 was the centerpiece of this charity
work, and the first group of children from Alkmaar were to come over
to recuperate as soon as the war was over.
The Mayor of Alkmaar, F.H. van Kinschot, was invited to the Alkmaar
Week in July 1945. To the surprise of many, the Mayor made his appea
rance at the Old Red House restaurant just as soup was served for
the official dinner. Later that evening Van Kinschot was the main guest
at the ball in the Pump Room In late August 1945 a delegation from
Bath received a grand reception in Alkmaar, and a drawbridge near the
Waagtoren was renamed the Bath Bridge The first group of children
from Alkmaar arrived in October and were thoroughly spoiled by the
Bathonians. A year later the bond between the two cities was made
official and regular exchanges were set up in education, sports and
culture, both Rotary Clubs leading the way.
to take to the North Sea. They reached Lowestoft safely, avoiding air
raids from the Luftwaffe and numerous naval mines. Eli was allowed to
travel on by train to Bath, where his sister Rosie and her husband lived
at 65 Great Pulteney Street 0
Eli Prins (Alkmaar, 9 May 1904), son of Jewish parents, and a well-
known theatre director and performer lived with his parents in Alkmaar
at Bierkade 15 O in the early days of May 1940. After the German
invasion he joined the Luchtbeschermingsdienst (much like the Air Raid
Precautions or ARP) and operated from HQ at the Waagtoren Q.
But soon he was needed as chief warden of District 7, located at
Wasserij Krom (a laundry) on Schermerweg 0On the evening of
14 May, the news broke that the Dutch Army was to capitulate at any
moment. Eli Prins realised that the Germans would arrest him, since
he had been heavily involved in providing escape routes for Jews from
Germany and Austria.
