Holland community remembers fallen
Leamington soldier

A SPECIAL service has been held in Holland to commemorative the 70th anniversary of
the death of a Leamington pilot whose RAF plane was shot down there during the
Second World War.
The Historical Association of Callantsoog, a town in the north of the country, marked
the death of William Edgar Peers - plus his four crew members - who were killed on
the night of January 15, 1941.
Their plane came down in the dunes of a nature reserve called Het Zawanwater and it
was there, on the exact 70th anniversary of the crash, that a wooden bench was
unveiled in their honour, carrying the names of the crew, plus some information
boards nearby.
Dries Blokker, chairman of the historical association, told us: "We have
commemorated Captain William Edgar Peers and his four crew members.
"We thought that it would be appropriate to honour and remember this crew, who
gave their lives for our freedom, exactly 70 years after their last flight."
The historical association was supported in its commemorative efforts by the Natural
Trust of The Netherlands and also local man Dan Van Lunsen, who carried out a
detailed investigation into the doomed flight.
William Edgar Peers, 36, was a married pilot officer for the 58th Squadron and son of
Leamington residents Cecil William and Harriet Emma Peers.
According to the Leamington war memorial published on our website -
www.leaminatonobserver.co.uk - his Whitley plane had taken off from RAF Linton-
on-Ouse for operations over Wilhelmshaven but was shot down by an enemy night-
fighter.
His body now rests at Amsterdam New Eastern Cemetery and he is also
commemorated on the All Saint's Church war memorial back in Leamington.
